THE rate of new HIV infections in Cumbria increased in 2008, according to new figures.

Last year, 23 new cases of HIV and Aids were recorded in Cumbria, compared to seventeen new cases in 2007.

Of the 23, 61 per cent were contracted through heterosexual sex.

Across the North West region there were 854 new recorded cases of HIV and Aids 2008 a 14 per cent increase on 2007.

In total 5,767 people across the North West are currently infected with either HIV or Aids with 123 of those cases recorded in Cumbria.

This means that the number of total cases in Cumbria makes up 2 per cent of the number across the region.

With most new cases in Cumbria caused by heterosexual activity, the county's health experts are issuing a warning.

Only condoms or strict monogomy offer protection from STIs, HIV and Aids during sexual intercourse.

Jane Muller, NHS Cumbria's Associate Director of Public Health, said: "Although there's been only a small number of new cases of HIV and Aids in Cumbria, it's still an issue that we can't ignore.

"If you are having sex with new or multiple partners you need to take the correct precautions and only condoms can offer protection against STIs, HIV and Aids.

"Although people suffering from HIV can live near normal lives with medication, there is no cure."

Dr Penny Cook is Reader in Public Health Epidemiology and investigated the figures.

She said: “HIV continues to have the biggest effect on people in our most vulnerable communities.

"However, infection with HIV is no longer a life sentence.

"People who think they may be at risk need to be tested in order to benefit from lifesaving treatment if necessary.”

If you are worried about STIs, HIV or Aids make an appointment with your GP or visit your local Genito-Urinary Medicine clinic for a test.
