Word Market Festival returns to region

EXCITEMENT is building among literature enthusiasts as a celebration of the written word in its many forms returns to South Lakeland.

Ulverston’s Word Market Festival begins tomorrow (Friday) and runs until Saturday, February 13, and draws in some of the finest writers both in the region and from further afield.

Highlights include A fiction writing workshop, with novellist R J Ellory, author of Richard and Judy Bookclub favourite A Quiet Belief in Angels, is sure to prove popular on Saturday at Swarthmoor Hall from 10am to 4pm.

An Evening with Nicolas Ridley, at Lanternhouse on Friday, February 12, is sure to prove popular, when the son of Arnold Ridley - who played Private Godfrey in the BBC’s hit show Dad’s Army - will talk about his biography of his father, Godfrey’s Ghost.

Chairman Loretta Blackburn said: “Word Market offers all writers, at all stages of the great writing adventure, the opportunity to come together and inspire and be inspired.

“So, whether you are an armchair adventurer, literary explorer or would be intrepid poet, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by coming along and enjoying the festival.”

Local writer Zosia Wand will provide budding Shakespeares with a helping hand at her Writers’ Surgeries throughout the festival, while world explorer Alastair Humphreys and mountain rescue writer David Allan will provide an insight on their experiences on Saturday at 6pm, at Lanternhouse.
