Green Flag status for park

3:53pm Thursday 4th September 2008

SOUTH Lakeland District Council and the Friends of Park Road Gardens have won a prestigious environmental award in recognition of their work at a popular park in Grange-over-Sands.

Park Road Gardens has officially achieved Green Flag status and a flag raising party including local councillors, Friends of Park Road Gardens, the Mayor of Grange over Sands, and Continental Landscapes raised the Green Flag at an official ceremony on Tuesday 2 September.

This is the second year in a row that a Green Flag has been awarded to the site, which is managed by South Lakeland District Council. The award highlights the park as achieving high environmental standards and a pleasant environment for people to visit including local residents and visitors to the area. Brenda Woof, portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “The council is delighted to achieve national recognition for the ongoing hard work at Park Road Gardens. This is the second year running that the gardens have received such a prestigious award and the council would like to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of Park Road Gardens for their help and support. SLDC will continue to work with the main contractor, Continental Landscapes, to ensure high standards are maintained, making the gardens a place people will enjoy spending time in.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by the Civic Trust and sponsored by English Heritage, began in 1996 as a way of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It was also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.
