'Lock it or lose it' warning

4:21pm Thursday 30th October 2008

POLICE are warning residents to ‘lock it or lose it’ following two sneak-in thefts in the Lindale area.

Both incidents occurred on School Hill, Lindale, Grange-over-sands on October 9.

In one incident, the offenders entered via a front door and searched upstairs while the elderly occupants were inside and took an amount of cash before exiting via an upstairs window.

The second house was unoccupied and entry was gained via a rear window but nothing was stolen.

Police are keen to trace two men who, on the same day, were seen handing out leaflets for UPVC windows on School Hill claiming that they were opening a firm in Windermere selling windows and doors.

They are described as white, between 20 and 30-years-old and one had thinning hair. Both were wearing dark jackets and trousers.

Another man on the same day was seen to jump out of a field at the top of Lindale village before running off down the road in the direction of Cartmel.

He is described as being about 45-years-old, of large build (approx 18 stone), with cropped dark hair and a goatee beard and was wearing dark trousers and a jacket.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Our officers do everything in their power to tackle crime and bring offenders to justice, but the basic message is simple – lock it or lose it.

“It is not the fault of the victim when a crime is committed, but by taking a little extra care to protect our property we can make it harder for offenders to commit crimes, and remove the heartache caused by becoming the victim of burglary or theft.”

If anyone has any information relating to these incidents contact DC Damian West at Kendal CID on 0845 33 00 247, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
