A COMMUNITY appeal to secure more than £150,000 to repair the roof of a 16th century church is gathering pace in the South Lakes.

Located in the Winster Valley, near Cartmel Fell, St Anthony’s Church was built in 1504 to save local residents from travelling all the way to Cartmel for church services and, 500 years later, it remains a valuable community asset.

However, in recent years, the state of church roof has become a major cause for concern, with the cost of repairing the damage identified as £165,000.

In a bid to raise these much-needed funds, Rev Mike Woodcock and church curate, Rev Steve Moorcroft, are spearheading a community appeal, which has already raised more than £3,000.

For more information about the appeal and to find how to get involved contact Rev Moorcroft on 01539-732154 or s.j.Moorcroft@btinternet.com.
