A BRIGHT spark from South Lakeland has successfully completed an apprenticeship scheme and secured a permanent position which will see him work to keep the lights on across the region.

Matthew Shaw, an overhead power line apprentice from Storth, was one of 14 graduates to complete the four-year training programme with Electricity North West.

Now in its seventh year, Electricity North West’s apprenticeship scheme has welcomed more than 100 apprentices looking to develop careers in the electricity industry working on the vast network of underground cables and overhead lines that provide power to homes and businesses in the region.

“I really enjoyed the apprenticeship scheme and I learnt something new every day,” said Matthew, 22.

“I highly recommend an apprenticeship scheme to others as you have a good mixture between classroom work and onsite experience and you get paid instead of the rising costs of university.”
