A YOUNG Cartmel man has made it to the semi-finals of one of the world’s most prestigious competitions for chefs.

Tom Barnes, 25, who works at Simon Rogan's L'Enclume, is one of 18 in the running for The Roux Scholarship, and will be judged by a host of celebrities including James Martin, Angela Hartnett, Gary Rhodes and Michel Roux Jr.

The winner of the life-changing competition, which Mr Barnes reached the final of last year, gets a three-month spell at any 3 Michelin star restaurant in the world.

Mr Barnes said: “It's a big prize, but I have not thought as far ahead as where I would like to go.

“I am a bit nervous because I got to the final last year so there is pressure, and the competition is tough, but I am excited."

The semi-final will see Mr Barnes cooking a dish with venison and artichokes, and a dessert made from a mystery box of ingredients.

The semi-finals will take place in Birmingham on March 20.
