PARISHIONERS at an Ambleside church have raised funds to build another fishing boat for a mission at Lake Turkana in northern Kenya.
The boat will be built by villagers in Turkana after funds were raised by the Lake District town’s Catholic church of Mater Amabilis.
Parishioners at Mater Amabilis have been raising money for the Missionary Community of St Paul the Apostle for several years.
There is already a fishing boat named after the Ambleside church.
The priest at the Mission, Father Steven Ochieng, visited the Ambleside church and was given a cheque for £800. He was also given a further cheque for £2,000 raised from donations for tea and coffee after Mass on Sunday mornings.
“The boats help our villagers become more self-sufficient by catching and selling fish” he said.
Parishioner Peter Benning said: “We have been helping the people of Turkana for 14 years now and it’s always a highlight when Father Steven visits.”
