A NEW indoor adventure attraction for all ages is set to open in the Lake District later this year.

The first ever real-life escape room in the national park will throw open its doors at Backbarrow in the next six to eight weeks, subject to gaining permission from the Lake District National Park Authority.

An escape room is an adventure game in which people are locked inside a space with other participants and they have to use elements within to solve a series of puzzles to get out, within a time limit.

Puzzle designers in America and Europe have set about creating challenges for the Backbarrow attraction which will be called Cliffhanger Rooms.

Wayne Riches, who also runs Lakeland Segway, is the man behind bringing the escape room concept into the national park.

"I have done escape rooms a few times and really enjoyed it," he said. "It's an activity where two or three generations can get together and have fun, that they can do indoors and in the evening.

"We need more indoor activities for locals and tourists and when you look on TripAdvisor in most cities in Europe, an escape room will be in the top recommended attractions.

"We expect to attract a similar customer base to Lakeland Segway."

The Cliffhanger Rooms will be situated in a building close to Lakeland Village's coach house in the village.

It will include one Egyptian pharoah themed room, one with a bank heist theme and another to be confirmed.

The rooms are being designed by a specialist based in Canada, who has experience of creating storylines for the rooms as well as making the sets. Cliffhanger Rooms will be recruiting three members of staff to run the attraction.

The story lines remain top secret, and will be revealed closer to the opening of the attraction.

Puzzles will be suitable for groups of two to six people.

Over the past few years escape rooms have become a worldwide phenomenon, spreading over Europe, Canada and America.

They have only recently started to take off in the UK, with rooms starting up in major cities, however Mr Riches hopes that Cliffhanger Rooms will be part of a craze.
