ULVERSTON'S Sir John Barrow monument on Hoad Hill is to be lit up tonight in a bid to test whether it is possible to wash the structure in colour.

The tests are being carried out by local LED specialists Marl International after the Town Council asked the company to share their expertise in ways to better showcase the monument at night.

New lighting won’t just improve the illumination of the landmark monument but it will offer the opportunity to remotely change the colours of the lighting from a computer keyboard.

Marl’s specialist team installed the test lights this afternoon and switched them on at dusk to run the changes on the white and RGB LED lights (so called because they combine the colours red, green and blue to make a huge variety of different shades).

One of the most high profile installations carried out by Marl International was a £100,000 project to install feature LED lighting at The Alnwick Garden, one of the UK's top visitor attractions adjoining Alnwick Castle.

Town council clerk Jayne Kendall said yesterday: "We are approached from time to time to light up the monument in different colours for different events and charities. We are doing a test to see what is possible."

The monument re-opens to the public at Easter and will be open from 1.00pm to 5.00pm on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

On Bank Holiday weekends opening times extend to Saturday and Monday. For the rest of the spring and summer the Hoad Monument opens on Sundays only from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.
