THERE is a new man donning the mayoral chains in Ulverston after cllr Barath Rajan's successor was announced.

Cllr Mark Wilson, Labour councillor for Ulverston East on South Lakeland District Council, is the man who will take up the next year in office.

He was elected as the new mayor at the recent annual general meeting of Ulverston Town Council, and will now be the town's civic leader at a range of engagements during the next 12 months.

His deputy mayor will be cllr Paul Smith, who represents the central ward on Ulverston Town Council.

"It's an honour and a privilege and people have been very kind," said Mr Wilson.

"I've seen after the election people will say 'well done' and people do recognise it as a special position."

Mr Wilson also declared a number of steps he would be keen to see the town take during his spell as mayor in order to declare his 12 months as successful.

He added: "I would like to see that the town council has made great strides with the 20mph campaign, that we've got the best part of the way with a cycle path and that many green initiatives have come a long way forward.

"I would also like to say a big congratulations to Barath, he's done very well to make it a very easy position for me to step into – and also a big thank you to all the other town councillors."
