Lakes Parish Council heard that Storm Desmond was strong enough to displace cobbles up a number of hills in Ambleside, which were washed down and scattered round the village.

But residents have been further upset that Highways filled up the holes left by the cobbles with lumps of tarmac and have asked county councillor Heidi Halliday to contact the Highways department about the matter.

Cllr Halliday said she was also seeking the views of Cumbria’s new Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall on rural speeding, including Elterwater’s Twenty’s Plenty and speed issues at Rydal.

She had also asked his views on whether reduced speeds of 20mph could be made enforceable rather than remain advisory.
