A LIVELY, well attended meeting took place at Millom Court to discuss the possibility of a community bus supplementing the existing skeleton bus service to Arnside presently provided by Stagecoach.

The chairman, Edgar Shepherd, reported that a small group of residents had begun looking at the problems created by the paucity of the bus service now available.

Many people, both young and old, were seriously inconvenienced by present arrangements as numerous speakers confirmed.

There were frequent buses from nearby Milnthorpe to Kendal, Keswick, Lancaster and Morecambe, but these were largely inaccessible to Arnside residents without cars.

It was understood that Cumbria County Council was prepared to consider extending the Rural, Village or Community Wheels services. However, it would be up to the community to provide drivers if a minibus was made available for such a service and there would need to be a small charge as bus passes would not be valid.

Providing the volunteer drivers seemed to be the main difficulty, although a car licence is sufficient for such vehicles.

A steering committee was formed to investigate the possibilities and to take the project forward.
