A LAKE District sculptor has created a trail of boulders featuring carved creatures on the shore of England's largest lake.

Stone mason Shawn Williamson, who works with Gordon Greaves Slate LTD at Troutbeck, is working on 12 sculptures, including otters, swans and fish by Windermere for the Low Wood Hotel, near Ambleside.

"I have really enjoyed this project," said Mr Williamson. "This is about showing tourists and the public the wonderful woodland creatures we have here, carved out of local stone.

"What was particularly exciting for me was the fact that these boulders had not been worked on in 3D format to this extent before."

The boulders were unearthed as part of the £16m extension to the Low Wood Hotel at Windermere, and the trail will be open to the public.

Mr Williamson, who was taught by internationally-famous Ambleside artist Josefina de Vasconcellos, has been working as a sculptor for 25 years.

"The local stone is very good for carving," he said. "It has been very exciting working with these stones, each kind of boulder has its own character."

Mr Williamson is working on four further pieces for the Windermere trail, including an owl and squirrels, which will be keeping him busy for the next few months.
