WORKS to progress the replacement of Gooseholme footbridge in Kendal have begun.

The design of the replacement bridge has started, with construction works intended to be complete by the end of January 2019.

Once complete it will form a key part of Kendal’s cycle network and provide a link to and from the New Road green space.

Gooseholme footbridge was one of nearly 800 bridges that were damaged or destroyed by Storm Desmond in December 2015.

To date, the council has completed repairs to 278, with work currently ongoing to a further 264.

The overall Flood Recovery Programme, involving more than 1,200 schemes, is set to completed by the summer of 2019.

The replacement footbridge is being delivered by Cumbria County Council and the works are being jointly funded with support from South Lakeland District Council and the Environment Agency.

It had been previously reported that work would start on the replacement bridge, which connects New Road with Gooseholme, in September 2017 but this was delayed. The new bridge will accommodate wheelchairs.
