A WOMAN has spoken of her relief that no one was hurt when a wall collapsed and crushed her husband’s car ‘like a pancake.’
Bronwen Spence, who runs Lakeland Picture Framers in Milnthorpe, said she could have been in the blue Peugeot when the accident happened yesterday lunchtime.
She was returning to the car parked in Harmony Green, Milnthorpe, when she saw the wreckage with a large chunk of wall on top of it.
“I might have been sitting in the car when the wall collapsed, because it had only just happened,” said Mrs Spence. “I was going to go home for lunch when I saw the police and thought: ‘What’s happened here.’ “My first thought when I saw the car was: ‘Oh dear’, to put it politely. The car is a total write off – it’s like a pancake.
“There were a few people working around there so I’m just glad no one was walking past at the time as they could have been killed. My husband said that if it was another car, a dog or even a child could have been in there.
“We park our car there every day as it is one of the only places that you can park in Milnthorpe for free all day. I nearly didn’t park there because it was a bit of a squeeze.”
It is believed that the wall belongs to Harmony Hall, a listed building which is owned by Walt and Dorothy Unsworth, founders of Cicerone Press, a successful publishing company based in Police Square.
Milnthorpe Parish Council vice chairman Alan Baverstock, who saw the aftermath of the incident, said: “People tend to park in that place all the time. It has made quite an impact on the car, to say the least.”
