The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for parts of northern England today.
It warned of sleet and snow showers and ice on untreated surfaces.
Frequent showers are expected this evening and overnight, falling as snow on hills.
Inland untreated surfaces are likely to become icy. It will feel cold with a strong northwesterly wind.
Police advised drivers to listen to their local weather forecast before setting out on their journey.
Andy Ratcliffe, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "We will see more wintry showers with more snow over high ground in western areas.
"Northern England will see wintry showers but it will not be as badly affected as Scotland."
