A REMOTE 17th Century barn has been transformed into the ultimate ‘green’ house with an in-depth and eco-friendly renovation.
The neglected Bampton building, which stands alone on a hillside, now has the ability to generate its own power ‘off grid’.
The architectural project was taken on by Kendal architects O’Neil & Petrie two years ago.
Bob O’Neill said their client had asked for traditional building methods and materials to be coupled with modern innovations.
These include hemp lime internal insulation, a rainwater harvesting plant, solar panels and its own wind turbine.
University students and green build enthusiasts have visited the site to follow its progress.
Mr O’Neill added: “Putting 21st century technology within a renovated historical building has created a warm low carbon shelter from the storm.”
