AN EXCITING new project is being lined up for Ulverston to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Victoria Park Gardens is set to be revamped as part of Ulverston In Bloom and renamed Jubilee Gardens.

New shrubs and bulbs will be planted, streetlights and benches improved and up to three bus shelters added to welcome visitors who arrive on buses at the town’s coach station in Victoria Road.

Ulverston Town Council needs to finalise costs and designs with South Lakeland District Council but the new look area could be officially unveiled at a ceremony on Saturday, June 2, during the jubilee celebration weekend.

Coun Janette Jenkinson told The Gazette: “It is about bringing people together, involving the community and schools.

“It needs upgrading and it will be a really, really nice place for visitors, because often it is the first place people see when they come into the town by bus, so we want it to look nice.”

Further activities being lined up are a ‘Bonfire Beacon’ on Birkrigg Common on Monday, June 4, being organised by Coun Jamie Samson and the district scout troop, which will be lit at the same time The Queen lights the ‘National Beacon’.

Macbeth will be performed in Ford Park on Sunday, June 3, and Sir John Barrow Monument will be open for the full jubilee weekend.
