Two elderly people killed on Saturday when their car left the B6260 have been identified as a married couple from Scattergate Crescent, Appleby.
The driver was 73-year-old Alan Murray, and the passenger his 74-year-old wife Barbara.
The incident, which saw the blue Vauxhall Omega go through a fence, off a bridge and rest upside down in a fast-flowing beck, happened at around 3.35pm near the New Inn at Hoff.
Fire crews from Appleby, Shap and Penrith attended the scene as well as the North West Air Ambulance.
Specialist equipment was used to carry out a thorough search of the river to ensure there were no other casualties.
The road was closed for four hours while investigations were carried out.
Anyone who witnessed the accident should contact PC Paul Brown on non-emergency 101.
