THE 122nd Brough Agricultural Show was the swan song for Show Chairman David Yeadell – and a great success for first time entrants.

The first time of showing for Stephen Ormerod resulted in him taking the Best Bird in Show with his eight-month old Light Sussex cockerel.

Mr Ormerod, from Preston, said: “It is the third win this season for this male bird, as we were successful at Gosforth and Cartmel. It’s the first time I’ve shown at Brough and it was great to take show champion.”

And 20-year old James Winter from Appleby was unbeatable for the second time this show season as he took Best in Show for his Texel two shear ewe after lifting the champion Texel trophy for the fifth year running at Appleby Show. Mr Winter, of Clickham Farm, brought the winning Texel from the Carlisle Auction from John Forsyth of Glenside Farm in Scotland. Thomas Brogden, of Hellbeck Farm, Brough, took reserve champion with his Swaledale.

Many entrants travelled from West Cumbria and beyond the county.

Champion Non Accredited Texel sheep was won by Keith Stones and family, of Richmond.

And in the dog section, John Harris brought his working Cocker Spaniel 11-month old Molly from Workington and won champion dog.

He came to Brough after taking champion at Hawkshead Show last week. Len Jackson, of Kendal, showed his 15 month working terrier Jesse, which he co-owns with Margaret Dugdale.

Jesse came second in the junior bitch and second post graduate bitch in the Bournemouth Championship Show and won a place at Crufts 2010.

In the horse category, 15 year old Shelley Teasdale from Carlisle rode for Allan Grove Shetland Stud and took first in the Shetland Ridden Class.

As well as the competitions on the day, there was glamour in the stands at the Pennine Young Farmers promoted their female members 2010 calendar inspired by the WI version.

Mr Yeadell, who has announced he is to step down as show chairman, said: “The weather lately has given us a few jitters and we were concerned about numbers attending this year’s show. However, despite the horrendous rain showers I am delighted to say we’ve managed to stage a good show this year.”
