Warm, dry weather brought a bumper crowd to the 123rd Brough Agricultural Society Show.

And there were new classes in the industrial tent and good entries in the equine classes. More than £2,500 of prize money and Silver Cups were awarded for events and classes across sheep, horticulture, floral art, confectionery, handicrafts, photography, children’s classes, art classes, poultry, rabbits, horses, dogs, dry stone walling, and vintage vehicles.

President of this year’s show Geoff Tunstall said: “We have been very lucky with the weather - which we haven’t been in past years. The numbers coming to the show are well up on last year.

“We are very fortunate to have a very active Young Farmers club here, and their members have been very active in helping get the show ready, and helping out on the day. And these Young Farmers are the future of this and other shows.”

Chairman of the show George Beckwith said: “The numbers have been slightly down overall on entries this year, but we still attract a good number of people in all classes. But it is great to see so many people coming to enjoy the show this year – it looks like it will be the largest crowd we have had at Brough Show for many years.

“And the future of the show looks secure.”

In the industrial Tent the new classes of a painting, a drawing and a hand-made piece of either china or pottery had good entries. And for the second year running a mother and daughter duo from outside Eden took the cups for most points in floral art section and shared most points in photographic classes.

Jayne Bainbridge, of Holme, also won best floral exhibit while her daughter Jean McGowan from Millom took best exhibit in photography classes.

Jean said: “We can’t believe we have won again. And my children also did well in the children’s sections with my son, Jack who is nine winning a first second, third and fourth while my daughter Nadine who’s five won a first, second and third. It’s been quite a day for the whole family.”
