KENDAL looks set to get a festive makeover this December as local councils announce plans for a Christmas market and ice rink in the town centre.
Inspired by Kendal’s twin town of Rinteln, ten wooden German-style chalets serving mulled wine and ‘other Christmas fare’ would be set up in Market Place.
The project – by South Lakeland District Council, Kendal Town Council and Kendal Business Improvement District – has been designed to ‘help stimulate the town centre’s early evening economy’ in the run-up to Christmas.
MORE TOP STORIES: Town councillors agreed to meet £3,000 of the £10,000 needed to fund the project at their meeting on Monday.
Joanne Golton, South Lakeland District Council’s economic development manager, said: “Once it gets to 5pm the town does seem to shut down, and it’s hoped this will improve the early evening and night-time economy.”
Current plans are to have a Christmas Market from December 11-14, a Made in Cumbria festive market from December 15-16 and an ice rink from December 21-23.
The normal market would be moved temporarily to Finkle Street, and there are also proposals for a ‘small stage and seating area’ with music and entertainment.
Ms Golton said this would be a trial year.
