KENDAL is set to be treated to a new speciality coffee shop, which is opening in early spring.

The Bristly Hog Coffee House, situated next to McDonald's at 69 Stricklandgate, will offer a large, rotating variety of coffees from independent roasteries from all over the country.

Owners Adam Hebbron and Sarah Rogers-Forbes, who previously owned a similar establishment in Otley, Yorkshire, decided to open up The Bristly Hog after asking the people of Kendal what they wanted.

Sarah said: "Every person we have spoken to in Kendal since we got here has said they would like an independent coffee house and that is what we would like to give them.

"There are lots of cafes but we think we are offering something different."

"There are lots a micro-roasteries popping up that are independently and family owned," added Adam. "People will be more willing to support family businesses than conglomerates.

"It's like with micro-breweries and real ales a few years ago; the same is happening with coffee now."

The Bristly Hog gets its name from the building it is based in, which historically housed a manufacturer of brushes made from hog's' hair.

It will operate in partnership with a number of small independent coffee suppliers including local ones like Cumbria's own Rinaldo's Speciality Coffee & Tea.

To celebrate opening, Adam and Sarah are running a competition, with the top prize being a free coffee per day from the shop for a whole year.

The owners were also keen to highlight that The Bristly Hog will be dog friendly.

There will be a dog station for towelling off wet dogs on rainy days, and even a dog-friendly menu.

Adam said: "We are dog lovers. Our dog Jorgie is our mascot."

Adam and Sarah are planning grand opening which they hope will take place in about six week's time, with the mayor of Kendal in attendance.

Directions of how to enter the competition can be found on The Bristly Hog Coffee House Facebook page.
