Mark Blackburn, who is organising one of the world’s toughest ‘iron distance’ Triathlons, told the parish council it would take place from Ambleside YHA on June 25, and that only 50 places are left from the total of 300.

Starting at 4.30am with a 2.5 mile swim in Windermere, entrants then do a 112-mile cycle ride over Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose passes, finishing with a 26-mile marathon run up Scafell Pike via Elterwater and Great Langdale.

Cllr Heidi Halliday is working with Highways to ensure that potholes on the Struggle up Kirkstone will be repaired in time.
