A WEATHER alert has been issued for Cumbria by the Met Office, which has wanred there is a potential thunderstorm risk from the early hours of tomorrow.

It says that the risk could persist until mid afternoon and as thunderstorms are extremely hard to predict, there is much uncertainty as to where these may strike. They are forecast to travel into the county from the Irish Sea.

The alert says that should a thunderstorm strike, there is the potential for localised torrential rain and hail which may lead to surface water flooding.

"We do not expect rivers to react however smaller becks and streams may be more vulnerable to the intense rainfall," said the Met Office statement.
