A KENDAL man who was one of 800 taking part in a cycle from Lands End to John o' Groats has helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

Former Kirkbie Kendal School pupil Simon Barker was one of 45 Balfour Beatty employees who took part in the 969-mile ride who raised more than £180,000 for charities including the North West Air Ambulance and the Prince's Trust.

The ride, from September 10 to September 18, did not take the shorted route between the two landmarks, instead taking the entrants through some of Britain's most stunning scenery. The route included 15,000 metres of ascent with the cyclists averaging 108 miles each day.
