A KIND South Lakeland boy battled torrential rain and thick mud to exceed his fundraising target on a bike ride.

Seven-year-old Fynlay Dodd-Hemingway, from Kendal, wanted to raise money for children with cancer and came up with an idea of a bike ride from Kendal to Lancaster.

On April 1, Fynlay and his mother Carly Dodd-Hemingway ended up cycling 33.6 miles from Kendal to Lancaster and from there to Morecambe.

"Fynlay and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored him and help him to exceed his target, we had a few donations come in after he finished his ride," said Carly.

"Fynlay is such a remarkable little boy and I really don't think he fully understands just what a kind, caring thing he has done. To him he was just riding his bike so he could help out others."

Fynlay exceeded his £250 target, raising over £360 for Children with Cancer UK and The Lullaby Trust.

Mrs Dodd-Hemingway said: "Fynlay was incredible on the day, riding along the main road on the A6, battling through torrential rain at Carnforth and riding through thick mud on part of the canal path where we felt like we weren't going anywhere for a while.

"He smiled and chatted the whole time we were out and he said at the end that he really enjoyed it."

Fynlay, who goes to Heron Hill Primary School in Kendal, is already looking forward to taking his next charity ride even further.

Carly said: "Fynlay was so proud of the amount he has managed to raise, and within an hour of finishing he had already planned his next bike ride Kendal to Blackpool. He really does amaze me."
