A PLAN to erect an eight foot tall statue of a Roman centurion on the promenade at Waterhead has been shelved.
Members of Lakes Parish Council heard at a recent meeting that South Lakeland District Council had refused permission to site the mock-bronze statue on the promenade.

It was proposed that the statue of the centurion and his war dog would have been mounted on a three foot high plinth, drawing attention to the nearby Galava Fort. It was occupied by the Romans between 70 and 300AD.
Councillors noted the refusal of SLDC and agreed to discontinue any further work on the project which would have cost £15,000.
