Kendal tattoo man makes his mark

Tony Davis at work
A TATTOO studio with a fine art slant has opened for business in Kendal town centre.
New Zealand tattoo artist Tony Davis, who now lives in Bowness, has launched Samsara, on Highgate, to offer bespoke designs.
The 38-year-old hopes to use the venue’s lower level for tattoo work, while the second floor will be used to exhibit multi-media art.
Mr Davis said: “I’ve always wanted to open my own spot for tattoos. I’m really chuffed.
“This was originally an art gallery and we thought it had a nice, light atmosphere.
“I do a lot of black and grey work. That seems to be popular at the moment. On top of that I also cater for design ideas that people bring in.
“I’m happy as long as I’m busy and I can do my art.
“It’s addictive. People come in and get one tattoo then, before you know it, they are back for something a little extra, on their other arm or on their ankle.”
His wife Marina added: “We’re aiming to be a very friendly shop, because I think people can be quite intimidated by tattoo places.”
Local art enthusiast Zoe Baker has helped the pair locate work from local multi-media artists from Kendal and the surrounding area.
She said their studio was keen to promote the link between all forms of creativity.
One of Samsara’s first customers was Paul Rodden, from Germany.
He has already spent around 12 hours in Mr Davis’ chair, in order to have images of rock band The Doors incorporated into a sleeve design.
