AN elderly passenger died after a car left the road in Bowness-on-Windermere.

A red Nissan Note was the only vehicle involved in the crash at the Lake Road junction with Glebe Road at 2.51pm on Sunday.

A 68-year-old woman from Buckinghamshire, who was travelling in the back of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other people were taken to hospital for treatment, including a 77-year-old local woman who was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital with severe back and neck injuries.

Two fire appliances, one each from Ambleside and Windermere, used cutting equipment to free a man and a woman trapped inside.

Police closed a section of the A592 for four hours while the accident was investigated.

Officers appealed for witnesses to the collision to contact PC Kevin Jackson at the Roads Policing Unit on 101.
