SOUTH Lakes-born genetics expert Debbie Smith has presented her work to the American Society of Human Genetics conference in California.

Debbie, from Allithwaite, was educated at Grange Primary School, Cartmel Priory School and Lancaster Girls' Grammar School before going to Liverpool University to study Applied Genetics where she gained a 1st class honours degree.

From there she gained a job in the Bristol Genetics Laboratory at Southmead Hospital, and recently completed her training to become a HCPC registered clinical scientist. Her specialist interest is in muscular dystrophy and she has developed additional testing to benefit patients from both the UK and abroad.

She was invited to present her research findings at the 64th annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics held at the San Diego Convention Centre (SDCC) in San Diego, and also at the FSHD International research consortium.
