STAFF and pupils from Windermere Preparatory School visited Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team and had an opportunity to find out about the latest equipment and technology used to find and help people on the Lake District fells.

Twenty pupils from Year Five were involved in the visit and it formed part of their work in school on adventure, a core subject for them all from a young age.

As well as seeing the three Team Land Rovers, each one converted and equipped for use on the mountains, and the team’s personal kit, the pupils were shown around the control room with its computers and large screens by team member Ian Griggs.

They also saw the rigid inflatable boat that the Patterdale team uses to reach the inaccessible eastern side of Ullswater in an emergency.

“The students were really excited and had some great questions about avalanches,” said member Stuart Smith. "They were very pleased to see the Land Rover that Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, donated to the team too.”
