A MUCH-LOVED primary school teacher is retiring after 38 years dedicated service.

Elaine Skikun, 60, went for her job interview at Vicarage Park C of E School in 1977 and has taught more than 1,000 pupils since then - including the children of some of her former pupils.

A special assembly was held on her last day, Friday, March 27, that saw children from all age groups present her with cards, re-enact plays she helped produce and play music.

A book, signed by former pupils now at Kirkbie Kendal or Queen Katherine School, was given to Mrs Skikun as a token of appreciation for the influence she has had on so many people's lives.

Mrs Skikun, who cannot walk down the street without being recognised, said: "I always wanted to be a teacher from the age of 10. Seeing children grow and flourish and enjoy life and look after each other and care for each other is what I would hope they remember me for. I have watched the school change and grow but I have always wanted to work here - it's a wonderful place with a lot of supportive staff and parents."

She intends to spend her retirement seeing her own children, reading and going to coffee shops but has vowed to return to the school on special occasions.
