AN Eden primary school will be shut for the rest of the week following a norovirus outbreak, says Cumbria County Council.

A deep clean of Appleby Primary School will take place on Friday and it is expected to re-open Monday morning.

A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said: “We have spoken to the school about this sickness outbreak and have provided public health information and advice on appropriate measures to stop the spread of infection.

“Diarrhoea and vomiting illnesses can easily spread from one person to another, particularly in places like schools where people are in close contact with each other for much of the day.

"Anyone who becomes ill should stay away from school until they have been free from symptoms for a full 48 hours.”

They added the following advice should be followed:

• Follow good standards of personal hygiene including washing hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food.
• Drink plenty of fluids and rest to prevent dehydration.
If you have concerns about your child becoming dehydrated, consult your GP or local pharmacy.
