Science student Emma finds winning formula

A FIBRE factory carving the career paths of the next generation of young scientists has been recognised through a host of national awards.

Young people working with Burneside company Technical Fibre Products (TFP) achieved so highly in 2011 that the company is gaining a national reputation.

Kendal teenager Emma Matthews is one of the students who has brought the company to prominence by winning the Institute of Chemical Engineers prize at regional Contribution to Business awards.

Her project on hydrogen fuel cells, developed with scientists from TFP, also helped her win a runners-up prize at the national final of the Composites and Smart Materials awards held in London.

In the last six months a student team from Queen Katherine School who worked with TFP were also nominated to represent the North West at the national Big Bang Science Fair.

The competition to be held in March will see them battle to win the best science project in the country.

Emma, 19, said: “The whole experience was amazing. TFP have taught me so much about the research industry.”

Michael Jeschke, research manager at TFP, said: “These success stories represent a lot of hard work and effort over the past 12 months.”
