CHILDREN from Eden schools spent two weeks looking after and raising mayfly nymphs in their classrooms.
The youngsters from Asby Endowed School and Bolton School, both near Appleby, and three schools at Carlisle and Penrith, collected the nymphs from local watercourses, and learned about the mayfly, its habitat, life-cycle, food and predators.
After the two-week Eden Rivers Trust project, which was funded by the Wild Trout Trust, the emerged adult mayflies and remaining nymphs were all returned safely to the river.
Pictured, left, are children returning unhatched mayfly nymphs to the river.
