THE funeral of former South Lakeland adventurer' Jonathan David, who died in a motorcycle accident in the Saudi Arabian desert last month, has been held in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Mr David, 45, who spent part of his childhood in Casterton and attended Dallam School at Milnthorpe, began travelling the world at the age of 17.

In the early years he financed his globetrotting by tackling a variety of jobs, including rice planting and working as a fisherman in India, but for the past two decades he worked around the world in oil industry management.

Mr David's mother, Zena Hardisty, from Northallerton, paid tribute to her adventurous son, who was a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast.

"Jonathan died as he had lived his life, enthusiastically, pursuing thrills, speed and action (and) as he would have wished, tearing through the desert in the sun on a Kawasaki, oblivious to the fact that his death would leave such a gap in so many lives."

Mr David's accident occurred on the Red Sea coast of Saudia Arabia on April 11. His funeral service and interment was on Saturday at St Mary's Church, Kirkby Lonsdale, where his father John David lives.
