CUMBRIAN farmers are being invited to take part in a Big Farmland Bird Count, which will take place in February.

The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) initiative, which is being backed by the National Farmers' Union (NFU), will follow on from 10 "bird identification days" which will be held across the country during January.

The count will take place between February 7 and 15.

The ID days, which last for two-and-a-half hours will be run by ornithological experts.

As places will be limited, farmers need to book in advance online at www.gwc.org.uk/BFBC.

A free bird identification guide will be available on the ID days.

To take part in the actual count, farmers need to just spend half an hour in a specific part of the farm, and complete a special count form which can be downloaded from the GWCT’s website at: www.gwct.org.uk/bfbc
