A NEW Herdwick 'brand' is to be launched at one of the Lake District's most popular events this weekend.

The Herdy Company and Herdwick Sheep Breeders' Association (HSBA) joined forces more than a year ago to develop the Herdwick Brand Marque to promote the local breed and its meat.

And the result will be unveiled at Grasmere Sports on Sunday.

Amanda Carson, secretary of the HSBA said the marque captures the Lake District fells and lakes with the distinctive Herdwick head in the foreground.

“We are very lucky to have had the support of the Herdy Company - this collaboration has realised real benefits to hill farmers.

"Our mission is the encouragement of the breeding of Herdwick sheep and the maintenance of the purity, the constitution and the character of the breed for survival in the high fells.

"Our vision is to support the cultural and socio-economic systems that have developed over hundreds of years, which have helped define the unique characteristics of the Lake District."
