Tuesday 1st September. Weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when an entry 3,506 sheep were forward consisting of 1,980 prime lambs, 897 store lambs and 629 cast ewes and rams. Topping the prime lambs at £97.80 was a pen of heavy Texel crosses from Messes Sowerby, High Croft, Milburn which were bought by Mr A Slack. Topping at 218.10p/kg was a Beltex cross lamb from Philip Brass, Bridge End Farm, Soulby which was purchased by Dowding’s Butcher, Appleby. Trade throughout the sale was flying with one of the strongest ringside of 15 active buyers all competing hard to secure lambs and resulting in many lambs being a good £6 - £8 dearer on the week and many more lambs of all weights and classes could have been sold to a strong demand!

Fortnightly sale of store lambs on Tuesday night, where an entry of over 897 lambs were on offer. Topping the sale at £68 was a pen of Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Ridley, Hawthorn Cottage, Temple Sowerby. Mule lambs topped a £50.50 for a pen of 22 from Messrs Bousfield, Cranberry, Mallerstang. The largest ringside of buyers for store lambs so far this season were in attendance for the ever growing store lambs sales at Kirkby Stephen. Local and distance buyers from South Lancashire and as far as Devon were competing for all types and sizes of lambs and many more could have been well sold. Pen of good continental cross lambs regularly achieved from £52 - £56.
