Carlisle: Saturday, September 12 Dispersal of the South Threave Herd South Threave Dispersal Sale Buyers travelled from all over the UK to attend the dispersal of the Souththreave Holstein herd owned by the Andrew’s family from Girvan on the West coast of Ayrshire. It was very nice to see so many of their family and friends travel to Borderway with a good number of animals returning to their home County. Forty four buyers purchased cattle with trade topping at 1,950gns with the milking herd averaging £1127. The quality of the animals selling were a real credit to the Andrew’s family who have been renowned for breeding top quality dairy cows for many years.

Topping the trade at 1,950gns was one of the cover girls on the catalogue, SouthThreave Travis Ruth 2 sired by the home bred Souththreave Travis. She calved with her third in June and was giving 42kgs, she was purchased by JJ Taylor High Whinnow Farm, Thursby.

The second cow to feature in the price charts was Souththreave Raider Envy sired by the home bred sire SouthThreave Raider. This close to perfect uddered heifer calved back in May and was due again in March giving 30kgs. She was purchased by Andrew and Daniel Bargh Wood Close Farm, Skelton for 1,900gns.

There was an outstanding line-up of freshly calved heifers that attracted a very brisk trade topping at 1,800gns for SouthThreave Raider Gypsy. She was a strong powerful framed heifer with a typically high and wide rear udder and went to Wood Close Farm, Skelton.

Souththreave First Title sired a large number of classy heifers including Souththreave Title Pansy who sold for 1,750gns to T Wilson, Creca Hall Farm, Annan.

In-calf heifers were in strong demand, they displayed an enormous amount of potential topping at 1,550gns for Souththreave Raider Ester and averaged £1237. The majority of these heifers were due October/November and were in calf to the home bred Holstein sire Souththreave Stardon.

The young calves and open heifers were very good value for money with trade favouring the buyer. The calf trade topped at 7,20gns and a number of occasions for daughters of Bossman, Garrison and Tallent Goldmine.

Border and Lakeland Club Show and Sale Wednesday, September 9 Townlaw Top Borderway In Style Borderway was packed on Wednesday September 9 for the monthly Border & Lakeland Show and Sale with buyers in attendance from the length and breadth of the UK. Trade topped at 2,100gns to average £1768 for a complete clearance. Following two consecutive rises in the GDT of almost 25% there does seem to be a slight glimmer of optimism within the dairy sector as milk producers look for light at the end of the tunnel. First time sellers Bryce & Bob Sloan, Darnlaw Farm, Auchinleck arrived in style winning both the Champion and Reserve Champion titles sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent. Commenting after the show judge Wilson Stewart from the Straidnahannah Herd said “...it was a pleasure to judge today and the quality was as good as I have seen for some time”.

The Champion heifer, Townlaw Silver Lupin sold for the top price of the day and now joins the herd of W Brewster, Borland Farm, Thornhill for 2,100gns. Lupin was giving 34kgs and sired by Townlaw Silver and bred from a super line of cows producing over 100ton lifetime. The same buyers also purchased the Reserve Champion, Townlaw Melody Duchess, sired by Townlaw Melody was bred from a VG86 dam and an Excellent grand dam and sold for 2,000gns.

The Hutchinson family from Redgate Farm, Kirkby Stephen sold Bowberhill Dorcy Gremlin for 2,000gns. She was sired by Dorcy and bred from three very special Excellent dams sired by Stormatic, Skychief and Raider. Gremlin is a potential bull dam and was purchased by Alan and Jonny McCamley Knockshiffnock Farm, Ayrshire.

Cumcatch Dispersal Following the Border and Lakeland sale was the first sale to disperse the Cumcatch herd of WM Dotchin, Cumcatch Farm, Brampton. This sale comprised 70 and the most freshly calved cows and heifers with the remainder of the herd to sell as they calve. Buyers were very impressed with the quality of the animals on offer with trade topping at 1,650gns for a freshly calved heifer giving 30kgs.
