1,232 head, comprising of 396 Store Cattle, 384 Weaners, 10 Commercial Dairy Cattle, 67 Dairy Bulls and 384 Calves.  There were in total 209 Vendors coming forward with stock to take advantage of the 152 purchasers at Carlisle.

Store cattle – A good entry of 396 store cattle sold at Borderway’s Weekly Sale.  A poorer plainer show on offer, some cattle was lesser money and others held up to recent rates.  Top overall was a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Murray, Prior House, Kirklinton, selling to £1285 and another to £1280. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £1265 for a pen of 6 from Messrs Conaghan, West Scales, Gretna.  Limousins peaked at £1240 from Messrs Studholme, Ash View, Wigton, Charolais sold to £1280 from Messrs Armstrong, Midtown, Maryport.  Heifers sold to £1250 for a Limousin Heifer from Messrs Whitfield, Orton Rigg, Carlisle and £1245 for another Limousin Heifer from Messrs Ewart, Isle of Dalton, Lockerbie.  Please advise entries to our office to help us to market and advertise your entries.

Weekly sale of calves.  Another fantastic entry of 384 calves forward.  Beef bulls saw an improved trade on the week with all classes selling well.  Heifers were slightly cheaper than the excellent rates of previous sales.  Top price of £510 was achieved for a very smart British Blue heifer consigned by S Armstrong, Shadwick Cottage, Little Bampton, Wigton.  Stronger Black and whites were dearer than previous weeks topping at £235 for a tremendous British Friesian from Messrs Fletcher, Round Bush, Annan.  Younger processing calves were still spiritedly bid for.

Cast cows, bulls & OTM cattle: A larger show of 514 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

403 cast cows were presented to a large crowd of 24 buyers with trade for continentals being good as last week. However the Black and White were less money on the week.

M/s Johnstone, West Wharmley sold the top priced Limousin cross cow selling for 685kg at 181.5p totalling £1243 purchased by Mr Birkbeck.

M/s Graham, Millers Hill run of outstanding cows topped at 835kg at 155.5p rounding to £1298 bought by Pickstocks. M/s Hardisty & Son, How Hall sold the top priced Charolais cross cow for 165.5p bought by Mr Sean McGimpsey. M/s Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow selling for 908kg at 135.5p totalling £1230 to Dawn Meat. M/s Cowx & Son, Hudscales run of Limousin cows topped at 752kg at 163.5p totalling £1229 to Tom Deakin.

M/s Dickinson, High House sold the top priced Friesian cow selling for 145.5p bought by Mr Lea Fell. M/s Mallinson, The Hill sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 140.5p to Sean McGimpsey. M/s Wilson , Old Church Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cows selling for 747kg at 136.5p totalling £1019 to Pickstocks. M/s Shepherd, Crownstone Farm sold the next top priced Holstein cow selling for 962kg at 105.5p totalling £1014 to Dawn Meats.

Prime Bulls:  A decent entry of 75 prime bulls forward and fittest bulls achieved top rates. Top overall was a Limousin cross from Main Street Farming selling to £1479.76 and another sold to £1468.63 from M/s Sisson, Kelbarrow, Penrith. Top pence per kilo was a Limousin from M/s Mulholland, Carlisle selling to 228.5p. Black and White bulls sold slightly easier on the week and topped at £1118.25 for a Holstein Friesian from M/s Taylor, East Park, Wigton. Friesians peaked at £1067.78 from M/s Hogg of Whitehead Hill, Brampton and Ayrshires peaked at £1070.93 from M/s CD & WA Bland, The Flatt, Brampton. Top Overall pence per kilo was an MRI from M/s Hogg, Whitehead Hill, Brampton achieving 182.5p. British Friesians reached to 172.5p from the same good home.

Prime Cattle: a very ordinary show of 35 prime steers and heifers were forward, with most vendors currently on a 6 day standstill, there was left forward. Top overall was from Messrs Sisson of Fenton Farm, Brampton with their Limousin Steer achieving £1623.60 and another selling to £1601.17 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Heifers peeked at £1542.98 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Bell of Woodhall Farm, Hexham, and was purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Top overall pence per kilo was a Limousin cross from Messrs Smith-Jackson of Hightown Farm, Haltwhistle peaking at 230.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Top steer was the aforementioned Limousin cross steer from Messrs Sisson of Fenton Farm peaking at 225.5ppk.

Prime Lambs: A slightly smaller show of 2988 prime lambs were harder to cash for all weights and grades. The top price of the day was claimed by Messrs Wood of Well Head Farm, Dean, who sold Beltex lambs to £87.80 and were purchased by Mr Robert Skelton. Messrs A & A Little of Hollands topped the pence per kilo at 204.4p with Beltex lambs which were also purchased by Mr A Dawson.

Store Sheep - A larger show of nearly 1500 store lambs were forward at the weekly sale. Topping the day’s trading was an excellent pen of fourteen Beltex lambs consigned by Messrs Horn of Birks Head Farm, Appleby-In-Westmorland realising £67 a head. Second in the ranking was a tremendous pen of Dutch Texel lambs from Mr S Dalton of Greenside Keep Cottage, Brampton selling to £64.

Purchasers for the smaller lambs were also well bid for, seeing Mule lambs up to £4 dearer on the week, with a top price of £50 from Messrs Rutter of Fartown, Alston.

Breeding Sheep – Following on the sale of store lambs was the sale of breeding sheep, with strong breeders very much in high demand. Peaking the day’s trade was a pen of eight Texel cross lambs from regular supporters Mr Routledge of Lynecrook, Carlisle, which sold to £118 a head. Closely followed by a pen of nine Mule 2shear from Messrs Ridley of Wood Hall, Wigton gaining £117 per life.

Special Sales – Continental Show & Sale Of Suckled Calves

The noted annual autumn prize show and sale of suckled calves held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle last Saturday once again attracted some outstanding cattle, with the averages for bullocks levelling at £1109 and the heifers at £987.

The pre-sale show was kindly judged by John Mellin, Mill House Farm, Long Preston, Nr.Skipton.  He presented the overall championship ticket to a black Limousin cross heifer shown by regular consignor Andrew Harrison, Grange Hall, Great Asby.  This eye catching heifer is sired by the Harrison’s homebred stock sire, Noble Buster, and is out of a Limousin cross cow.  She was sold for £1350 to AD Bishop of Gloucester. 

The reserve winning ticket was won by Ian Lammie Longhouse Farm, Cumnock with his Charolais cross heifer.  This stylish heifer is a daughter of Allanfauld Oasis and was bred from a Limousin cross British Blue dam.  She later sold for £1700 and to the judge, Mr Mellin of Skipton.

Topping the sale at £2600 was the 3rd prize Limousin cross heifer shown by Messrs Atkinson of Demesne, Whitehaven.  Their 9 month old heifer is sired by the herds Limousin stock bull, Loosebeare Dillon, and was bred from a British Blue cross Limousin cow which was bred by Messrs Henshall of Eaglesfield.  Successful buyer was Messrs Mackay of Glasgow.

The best entry opposite sex to the overall champion was a red Limousin cross steer also consigned by Ian Lammie of Cumnock.  This entry was sired by Powerhouse Elite and was out of a Limousin cross British Blue cow.  He later sold for £1200.
