Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves which included the Autumn Show for Calves 12 weeks and under which was kindly sponsored by Massey Feeds and Genus. A tremendous show of calves were ably judged by Messrs Shepherd of Drigg Moorside. His Champion and top price of the day was a superb 7 week old Simmental Heifer bred by Mr Alan Riley, Underhelm, Grasmere and sired by Goldies Crackerjack. It later went on to sell for £660 and purchased by Harry Hunter, Cape Farm, Berrier. The Reserve Champion was a long stretchy 7 week old British Blue bull from Messrs, Harper, West House which made £510 and was purchased by the Judge. All calves were a fantastic trade from start to finish with a large ring side of buyers ensuring excellent prices for all sellers. Strong continental calves were noticeably dearer on the week with black and whites maintaining last week’s excellent trade.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 1334 head of cattle at this Week’s Wednesday Sale comprising of 939 Store Cattle and Weaners, 78 at the Border & Lakeland Club Sale and 317 Calves STORE CATTLE – A marvellous entry of 569 forward store cattle present at the weekly sale with a huge turnout of buyers with many not seen for some time. All classes met a firm trade although less than some of the previous weeks. Top overall price of the day was from Messrs Faulder, Sceughmire, Carlisle who regularly tops the Borderway sale. His Limousin cross steer sold to £1330. Messrs Barnes, Hutton Roof Penrith achieved £1290 for a heifer again a Limousin. Messrs Robson, Merryshield, Newcastle sold the top Blonde Cross heifer selling to £1200. Black and whites were very easily sold with a top of £970 gained by Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Wigton for a Friesian steer and £960 for another. Messrs Atkinson, Hawkrigg, Appleby sold 5 Holstein Friesian to £940.

ALSO: BORDER & LAKELAND CLUB SHOW & SALE KEPCULLOCH SUMMER TOPS AUTUMN SALE The October edition of the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club’s sale was a credit to all the breeders involved. The quality on offer was incredible, great uddered animals with super feet and legs topping at 3,200gns to average £1697 for a 100% clearance.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis and Cogent, and expertly judged by Alan McCamley owner of the Scotsvale Holstein herd, Knockshiffnock Farm, Ayrshire. He selected Espland Stanleycup Amanda as his Overall Champion, consigned by DI & AA Cannon. This perfectly balanced black heifer had an udder that flirted with perfection and sold for 3,000gns to R&A Agnew, West Dhuloch, Wigtownshire.

The Reserve Champion was exhibited by Gavin Struthers Bankhead of Balcurvie Farm, Fife and sold for 2,450gns to R McNeil Cairnpat, Wigtownshire. Balcurvie Twister Quince was sired by Ginary Twister and was giving 32kgs.

Kepculloch Artes Summer consigned by Robert Steel & Son Kepculloch Farm, Balfron topped the sale at 3,200gns to Hamish Campbell, Auchenlane, Castle Douglas. Summer was sired by Go-Farm Artes and will be the ninth generation to classify either Excellent or Very Good. Her third dam was the 95 pointed Rudolph that won the Royal Highland Show for the Steel family back in 2005 and her Excellent 92 grand dam, sired by Shottle sold in the October 2012 sale for a top price of 4,000gns.

The catalogue was packed with well bred heifers, one of the stars was Carhall Meridian Elizabeth 2 consigned by John Bushby, Whangs Farm, Egremont. She was a granddaughter of Carhall Lyster Elizabeth EX93 who was Grand Champion at the National Holstein Show in 2007 and Reserve at the Royal Show the same year. She sold for 2,700gns to R McNeil Cairnpat, Wigtownshire.

A close to perfect heifer sired by Toc-Farm Goldsun sold for 2,100gns, she was Townlaw Goldsun Nosegay consigned by Firm of Bryce Sloan Darnlaw Farm, Ayrshire. She was bred from four generations of Very Good dams with over 60ton lifetime production. She was purchased by R Byers & Son Woodslee, Dumfries.

Steven & Ann Morley Petteril Bank Farm, Carlisle sold two heifers topping at 2,000gns for Petteril Braxton Truina who now joins the herd of Alan McCamley Knockshiffnock Farm, Ayrshire. She was sired by Braxton and bred from the Triuna cow family from Wilsondale in the USA.

The next dairy sale at Bordwerway takes place on the 4th November and features the annual National Ayrshire Sale there is 150 entries already forward.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A great ring side of 20 buyers with 45 active accounts came to Borderway with a large entry of 355 cast cows and stock bulls with continental and plain cows being in great demand.

M/s Scott, Borton Hall sold a Limousin cross cow for 175.5p to Mr Birkbeck. Kilnstown Farms Ltd run of cows topped at 167.5p for a Saler cross cow sold to Les Fell. M/s Oliver, Cawfields run of outstanding cows topped at 158.5p (x2) for a Limousin cross and British Blue cross both purchased by Owain Llyr. M/s JK Goldie, Townfoot Farm run of cows topped at 815kg at 156.5p totalling £1275 for a pure Limousin cow purchased by Sean McGimpsey. M/s Jefferson, Abbey Cowper Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cross cow for 796kg at 149.5p rounding to £1190 bought by Owain Llyr. Black and White bulls lacked in flesh and sold to £1167.21 for a Holstein Friesian from M/s Boyd, Hillowtown, Castle Douglas. M/s Mitchell of Mirkbooths, Carlisle sold the top pence per kilo of 167.50p for a Holstein Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 48 prime steers and heifers forward whereby a very good trade was had by all. Top overall steer from M/s Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont selling to £1596.45 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. M/s Crichton also sold top overall heifer which was a Limousin cross and achieved £1594.80 and again was purchased by Pioneer Foods. M/s Bowe of Bothel, Wigton sold top Overall Pence per Kilo was 223.5p for a Limousin cross heifer from M/s Harryman, Keskadale, Keswick and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. M/c Crichton, Loughrigg sold the top pence per kilo steer achieving 217.5p. More could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

ALSO: STORE SHEEP Harrison & Hetherington held their Weekly Sale of store and breeding sheep.

STORE SHEEP – Once again there was a tremendous turn out of store sheep which were presented to a good ringside of buyers. There was good demand for all classes of sheep which saw the average rise £2 on the week. Topping the great show of sheep was a pen of tremendous Beltex lambs from Messrs Fearon, Fell View Farm, Branthwaite which also saw the season’s record price of £82 a head. The demand for small, long keep lambs was also very strong, seeing small lambs easiest to sell with TR & EA Milburn, Wall End Farm, selling a drove of 41 small but great quality Dutch Texel lambs to a top of £62.50 and the run averaged at £59.50. Lambs were in high demand and more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

Topping the day was a pen of 5 Texel shearling gimmers from Mr Skelton, Newhall Farm at £130 a head who later went on to average £122.35 for the run. Small but quality packets of ewes and breeding sheep are still in demand.

Breeding Rams: The sale of rams saw a very selective trade. Topping the day’s trading was £300 x 4 firstly from I & PJ Graham, Red Cat Farm for a Suffolk Shearling, secondly from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head Farm with a Suffolk lamb and two Texel lambs from GJ Topping, Basco Dyke.
