Prime Sheep On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,935 prime sheep, comprising of 1,450 prime lambs, 848 cast ewes & rams & 637 store lambs.

Topping the sale at 200.0p/kg was a pen of Beltex lambs from Mr WH Brass, Low Row, purchased by Mr S Stodart, Wigton. Mr WH Brass also topped the price per head section at £86 for a single Beltex, also bought by Mr S Stodart.

The overall sale was topped at £500 for an Aberdeen Angus weaned bull calf from Miss R Smith, Cote Hill Farm, bought by Mr WH Brass, Low Row.

A reduced entry of prime bulls were a strong trade, mirroring the national beef trade at the moment. Messrs Pearson, Manor Farm sold the pick of the market, a British Blue at 200.5p/kg (£1,389.38) to Peter Smith, Cocklakes Farm Shop.

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 560 Store Cattle.

A pleasing entry of store cattle found best quality beef bred cattle in demand. Quality heifers sold well, but strongest cattle were easier.

Ken Stanley, Keld Farm topped the trade with a Blonde X Bullock at £1,355. Heifers sold to £1,155 for a pen of Charolais from Messrs EA & W Strong, Ploveriggs.
