On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 900 store lambs. 900 Store Lambs sold to an extreme trade following the prime lambs. Buyers travelled near and far to purchase lambs. Store lamb sales have taken off here at Penrith, do not hesitate to sell your lambs here.

Topping the sale at £69 was a Texel lamb from Messrs MD & A E Little, Ennerdale purchased by Mr J Little, Kirkoswald.

Topping the sale on the day at 231p/kg was a Beltex lamb from M T P & S D Wills, Fawcett Park and bought by Mr S Stoddart, Wigton.

The top price per head on the day at £90 was for a pair of Beltex Lambs from R & J M Ridley, Ranbeck. Also achieving the price of £90 was W H Brasss, Low Row for a Continental lamb and a Beltex lamb from M T P & S D Wills, Fawcett Park. All of these lambs were also purchased by Mr S Stoddart, Wigton.

Prime lambs took off with an unbelievable average of 166.4p/kg SQQ being achieved.

Cast ewes & rams sold to a sharper trade once again, with good Continental’s £90 plus. Horned ewes would be £5 a piece sharper again with many more needed to meet the demands of the buyers.

Calves topped at £380 for a British Blue bull from Messrs Turnbull, Monks House purchased by J & A Wear, White House.

Heifer calves topped at £340 for a British Blue from H & E M Hunter & Son, Berrier Head Farm, which was also purchased by J & A Wear, White House.

Another good offering of calves were forward on the fortnight with all classes of Black and White’s being good to sell.

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of Store Cattle, with a catalogued entry of 264 store cattle forward.

Reports of a falling store cattle trade were unfounded at Penrith on Monday. Trade was rather better than expected with buyers from throughout the North of England.

Dennis Bowman yet again topped the trade with a Charolais Bullock at £1,385. Quality heifers always sell well, Mr T W Metcalfe of Home Farm sold to a top of £1,375 for a for a British Blue.

Prime Cattle

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of Prime Cattle.

David Raine sold the pick of the market, a Limousin heifer at 217.50p/kg (£1333.28) purchased by Peter Smith, Butcher of Cocklakes. Best butchers cattle are always needed at Penrith Auction on Mondays.

A reduced entry of Prime Bulls were a steady trade very much in line with the national trend. David Raine once again topped the trade at 119.50p/kg (£1444.38) for a Limousin Bull purchased by Pearson Butchers of Bradford.

On Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their fortnightly sale of 70 OTM Cattle.

Another large entry of cast cows were presented to a full ring of buyers. The best price of the day was 147.5p/kg to R G Todd, Crosby Hall for a Limousin. Cows sold to £1208.63 for a Limousin from R Hall & Sons, Inglewood Edge.

Prime Sheep

Wednesday 18th November 2015 On Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,027 prime sheep, comprising of 2,139 prime lambs and 888 cast ewes and rams.

Prime lambs sold to a nice trade, with an average of 156p/kg SQQ, with the best lambs regularly at £2/kg plus.

Topping the sale at 213.0p/g was a single Texel lamb from Mr J Stalker, Ratten Castle, bought by Vivers Scotlamb Ltd Top price per head on the day was £91, this was paid for a single Beltex lamb from Messrs MTP & SD Wills, Fawcett Park, purchased by Mr S Stoddart, Wigton.

Cast ewes and rams sold to a premium, with Continental bred ewes being at least £5 dearer on the week.
