Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves with a larger entry of 295 forward. All classes of calves were dearer on the week with new buyers ensuring a fantastic trade. Top price was a strong British Blue Bull from Fisher Farming, Smalmstown selling to £540. Black and whites were dearer on the week. Many more calves could have been sold for seller’s to take advantage of the fantastic trade.

STORE CATTLE & WEANLINGS Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 865 head at their Weekly Wednesday Sale of Cattle comprising of 439 Store Cattle, Bulls and weaners, 295 Calves and 131 Dairy Cattle including 105 forward for the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale.

A very busy Borderway saw all classes of cattle sell well ahead of expectations. 171 customers consigned cattle and with over 140 active buyers in attendance a useful days trading was enjoyed by all concerned.

STORE CATTLE – A smaller entry of 237 store cattle forward. All classes were sharper on the week and a flying trade was witnessed. Topping the day’s trade at £1260 was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Conaghan, Red House, West Scales, Gretna. Heifers were also in high demand to a top of £1205 for a Charolais cross consigned by Messrs Metcalfe, Low Fauld, Ruckcroft.

BORDER & LAKELAND CLUB SHOW & SALE

KEPCULLOCH TOP’S TRADE AGAIN

The November Border and Lakeland show and sale took place at Borderway, Carlisle on Wednesday 25th in front of a large crowd of buyers from England, Scotland, Wales & N. Ireland. Trade topped at 3,500gns to average £1589 with cattle going to sixteen counties. The quality on offer was outstanding and total credit must go to the breeders who have developed such high quality herds. The show was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and judged by Willy Brewster Wester Borland Farm, Stirling. His overall champion went to Kepculloch Fever Laurie consigned by Robert Steel Kepculloch Farm, Glasgow. She was a daughter of Crackholm Fever and bred from the Laurie Sheik cow family made so famous by all the incredible Comestar sires. This long, black stylish heifer has the potential to be a big timer and will show as a Senior two year old next spring at UK Dairy Expo, she sold for a top price of 3,500gns to George & Jason Booth from the Beechview Holstein herd in N. Ireland.

Reserve Champion heifer was consigned by the Davidson family owners of the Errolston herd near Gretna. Errolston Kensington Fanella had a close to perfect udder, excellent feet and legs and had that eye catching style. She sold for 2,200gns to the judge who purchased an outstanding group top quality heifers including Espland Stanleycup Sue consigned by Alan Cannon for 1,850gns.

Another heifer that caught the judge’s eye was Petteril Glauco Papoose, consigned by Steven & Anne Morley from Petterill Farm, Southwaite. A daughter of Toc-Farm Duplex Glauco and bred from a super branch of the Papoose cow family this heifer really did flirt with perfection, displaying perfect balance. She sold for 2,500gns to Alan & Jonny McCamley from Ayrshire.

Mr Bowdler, from Shrewsbury assembled a wonderful group of heifers all displaying great udders combined with dairy strength including Cambus Lylehaven Morag consigned by John & Gordon Lyle Nether Pratis Farm, Fife for 1,800gns.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place next week, Wednesday 2nd December and features 120 animals selling in the December Borderway Monthly Dairy Day. The sale comprises 70 fresh milkers with special consignments from W R Wilson & Sons Mayfield and Gavin Struthers Balcurvie. In-calf and bulling heifers are also selling. A reminder to all breeders that the 28th edition of the world famous Black & White sale takes place next week on Saturday 5th December everyone is welcome.

At Borderway Mart on Monday 23th November, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with once again a show of 470 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle forward with over 20 buyers and 50 accounts active.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A large show of 322 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to 20 active buyers which ensured a sharper trade with buyers for all classes.

M/s Kitching & Co, Glencarthholm Farm, Canonbie sold the top priced British Blue cross cow selling for 149.5p to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Lawson & Son, South Farm, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne sold the top overall Charolais cow selling for 939kg at 131.5p totalling £1234 also purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. M/s Allan, Glenturk Farm, Newton Stewart sold the top overall priced Simmental cow selling for 815kg at 133.5p totalling £1088 to Andy Hawley. M/s Close & Son, Fishwick Mains, Berwick-Upon-Tweed also sold a Simmental for 898kg at 119.5p totalling £1073 also to Andy Hawley. M/s Livingston, Kirtlevale sold the top priced Limousin cross cow selling for 761kg at 139.5p rounding to £1061 to again Mr Hawley.

A good demand for Black and White cows of all classes. M/s Winter, West House Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross for 146.5p to Mr Wesley Gracey, Aberdeen. Messrs Nixon of Oakwood Farm, Selkirk sold top British Blue cross achieving £1319.46, top pence per kilo of 215ppk which was attained by Messrs Livingstone of Kirtlevale, Gretna for a Limousin . Messrs Little of The Guards achieved 213.5ppk. Black and Whites peaked at £1148.88 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Clark of The Whins Farm, Lockerbie, and finally top pence per kilo of 173.5ppk was attained by Messrs Hewson Bros of Jerriestown, Carlisle for a Holstein Friesian.

MONDAY, November 23

A larger entry of quality lambs were on offer, with purchasers bidding strongly on all classes of store sheep. Securing the day’s top price of £70.50 per head was a pen of four Beltex x Charollais from Messrs Thomlinson of Long Park, Carlisle. Followed by a consignment of Texel x from the same home attaining £68.50 per life. This great run of 50 lambs later went on to average £64.09. Mules were also very well bid for, seeing many lambs in the high £50’s. Topping the mules with a pen of wethers was Mr G McGregor of Longrigg House, Roweltown, which sold to £59 per life.

Many more lambs could have been sold with ease, due to the large demand for all types.

CALVES WEDNESDAY, November 18 Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves which saw a large portion of the 262 forward dairy bred. Demand throughout was very patchy seeing very strong black and whites and beef bred calves very well bid for but smaller dairy bulls more difficult to sell.

Messrs Eilbeck & Son, Plumbland Farm, Wigton with a quality pen of calves had the top price of the day with a Limousin Heifer at £480. STORE CATTLE – A smaller entry of 291 store cattle forward selling and achieving a very good trade for all classes forward. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton selling to £1325, the same vendor also sold the top Charolais cross heifer which peaked at £1250, steers topped at £1300 for a great Charolais from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth, who’s run of 8 averaged £1240. Black and Whites looked easier sold and topped at £875 for two Friesians from Messrs Richardson, Heggle Lane, Wigton. STORE SHEEP – After a very wet weekend a smaller show of last week’s was forward at Borderway. Store Lambs were still in great demand with the weather not taking any harm.

Lambs were very easily sold and a very large proportion of continental lambs saw £56 and over.
