Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 841 head at their Weekly Wednesday Sale of Cattle at Borderway, comprising of 331 Store Cattle, Store Bulls and Weaners, 353 Calves and 151 Dairy Cattle entered in the December Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale, which also included the Reduction Sale of the West Mossgiel Pedigree Ayrshire Herd.

A large crowd gathered at Borderway as a very useful selection of cattle in every section at this late stage in the year met a very spirited demand in all rings. Despite the gloomy outlook in the cattle industry there were over 200 active buyers operating, ensuring Borderway continues to be the leading centre in the North of England for all classes of cattle.

STORE CATTLE – A good entry of 154 store cattle forward at Borderways weekly sale, whereby once again all classes remain very good to sell. Top overall was a superb Limousin Cross heifer from Messrs Baxter, Eden Banks, Carlisle achieving £1240. The same vendors also sold top overall steer gaining £1235 for two Limousin crosses many more could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

WEANED CATTLE – A tremendous show of 177 weaned cattle forward with all categories dearer on the week. The sale topped at £1035 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm, Appleby in Westmorland. Heifers topped at £870 again for a Limousin from T Storey, Penton, Carlisle and finally Steers topped at £840 for two Limousin steers from Messrs Dent, Beamwham, Haydon Bridge Hexham, many more could have been sold to the buyers advantage.

A larger show of 347 calves were forward with all classes selling to less money than the excellent trade witnessed over the previous month. Younger continental and native calves were hard to cash. Top price was £470 for a strong British Blue bull from Fisher Farming Ltd, Smalmstown,Longtown.

 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock, once again an entry of 407 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A similar number of 258 cast cows were presented to an increased ring side of buyers with a plainer show on offer and over supply of foreign cows resulting in cows with meat and good continental cows being dearer.

Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top priced Blonde cow selling for 169.5ppk to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Moscrop & Son, Rye Close sold the top priced British Blue cow selling for 165.5ppk also to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Storey & Son, Woodhead Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow selling for 164.5ppk to Jewitts, Spennymoor. Messrs Watret, Burnside sold the top priced Charolais cross cow selling for 156.5ppk to Mr David Barker. Messrs Bell, Mossband Hall cows topped at 724kg, 156.5ppk, £1133ph for a British Blue cross cow bought by Mr David Barker. Messrs Fisher, Geltside Farm run of cows topped at 145.5ppk for a Swedish Red and 138.5ppk for a Montbeliarde purchased by Mr Les Fell and Mr Sean McGimpsey. PRIME BULLS – A larger entry of 93 prime bulls were forward whereby all classes would be slightly better to sell especially continental bred bulls. Top overall was a Limousin bull from Messrs Henshall of Sarkshields Farm, Lockerbie, selling to £1666.88. Messrs Twentyman of Osborne Farm, Wigton sold a Limousin cross which achieved £1624.87. Messrs Bradley of Northrigg Hill, Brampton sold the top priced Blond cross to £1519.49, Messrs Johnson of West Wharmley, Hexham sold top overall Charolais to £1472.42. Top pence per kilo of 223.5ppk was attained by Messrs Blenkharn of Westgarth Hill, Penrith with a Limousin, selling to 221.5ppk was a Blonde bull from Messrs Bradley of Northrigg Hill. Top overall black and white was a Friesian from Messrs Bland of The FLatt, Brampton, achieving £1142.40 and top pence per kilo of 178.5ppk.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 56 prime steers and heifers were forward, with all classes selling very well. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Hewitson of Shatton Lodge Farm, Cockermouth attaining £1642.48 followed by Messrs Crichton of Loughrigg, Egremont also selling a Limousin to £1631.38 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Dixon of Low Whinnow, Carlisle sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1533.87 and was purchased by Mr Fell. Top steer pence per kilo was gained by Messrs Dodd of West View, Penrith, selling their Limousin cross to 225.5ppk and was purchased by R & JP Mullholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. In the heifer section top overall all and pence per kilo was again received by Messrs Dodd of West View which sold to £1302.88 and or 239.5ppk and was also purchased by Messrs Mullholland Butchers, Great Orton. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime sheep attracted an entry of 2703 head. Trade was slightly back on the week, but much better than predicted. Topping both price per head and per kilo was Messrs Bell of Low Houses who sold 40kg Dutch Texel lambs to £90.80 and 227ppk purchased by Mr Andrew Dawson.
