WEST MOSSGIEL REDUCTION SALE. RAZZLE LIZZIE SELLS FOR HIGH FIVE The West Mossgiel name is one of the most respected and highly valued within pedigree Ayrshire breeding circles and has been for many years. This world class herd was established back in 1948 and developed by master cow man Robert Cunningham who sadly passed away last year. Robert’s son Bryce has now taken on the mantle and to ensure a long term future for the family business they decided to sell some of their very best animals.

Trade topped at 5,000gns to average £1422 for a complete clearance with five members of the famous Lizzie cow family averaging £2635. Many of the Cunningham’s friends and neighbours supported the event in person and purchased a large percentage of the sale animals. Bryce would like to wish everyone much success with the West Mossgiel animals and is more than gratefully for all the support he has received over the past few weeks.

Topping the trade at 5,000gns was West Mossgiel Lizzie 65, she had recently classified VG88 in her third lactation was sired by Willsbro Red Razzle. She was the seventh generation to classify Excellent or Very Good. Her third dam was the world famous West Mossgiel Lizzie 34 the first home bred cow in the Ayrshire breed to classy Excellent 95. The super stylish cow was purchased by Mr Mungo Bryson.

West Mossgiel Lizzie 60 was the next cow to feature on the price chart selling for 3,900gns to the Mattinson family Rosewain Farm, Wigton. This was a power framed cow sired by Aramis bred from an Excellent 92 Talent and then the Excellent 95 Lizzie 34.

One of the new emerging forces within the Ayrshire breed is the Emerald Syndicate who is forming an elite show herd. They purchased West Mossgiel Bookman Emerald 2 for 3,200gns, she was dry and due early January to Aramis. She had tons of style and is bred from the famous Canadian cow Bonnie Brae Emerald.

Noard Easter Black Lawn was purchased by Robert Cunningham in 2014 as an in-calf heifer and like all great cow men he had the ability to see her potential. She was sired by Destry and was bred from ten generations of Excellent cows from the famous Roxy cow family. She was dry and due to Destry Hestry in February and sold for 2,150gns to the Brough family Bolton Cottage Wigton.

D&C Sanderson Thackthwaite Hall Wigton purchased a number a super cows including West Mossgiel Cherub who had recently classified EX91 following her debut appearance at Argi Scot. She was sired by Remedy Red and sold for 2,000gns. The quality on offer was again outstanding with a wonderful selection of super udder cows and heifers many bred from exceptional cow families. Trade topped at 2,200gns and averaged £1552 for just over 170 head sold.

The winner of the UK’s Premier Holstein Herd in 2015 was the Hodgson family from Carlisle owners of the renowned Wormanby herd and it was one of their heifers that grabbed the limelight. Wormanby Legend Ruby sired by Wormaby Legend was the overall Champion and sold for the top price of the day to the judge Mr Andrew Wilson from the Northshields Holstein herd in Fife.

His Reserve Champion went to Pettril Daiblo Carol consigned by Stephen & Anne Morley. She sold for 1,700gns to Mr Willy Brewster Water Borland Farm, Stirling.

One of the exceptional pedigrees in the catalogue was Hilltop Explode P Rosabel sired by Explode and bred from the three times Royal Winter Fair Champion Thrulane James Rose. Rose is one of the most iconic Holstein cows of the modern era. This fancy uddered Explode daughter sold for 2,100gns to Drointon Holsteins in Stafford.

Topping the cow trade was an amazing uddered cow from Rennick Thompson. She was fresh in her second and was giving close to 60kgs. She sold for 2,000gns to James McNeil from the Cairnpat herd.

Also selling for 2,000gns was black silky heifer consigned by Robert Steel from the Kepculloch herd. Kepculloch Alexander Beatexus had tons of show style and was purchased by Andrew & Euan Lawrie from the Grangehill Farm.

The next dairy sale at Borderway is on the 6th January and features over 150 animals comprising of freshly calved cows and heifers, in-calf heifers and bulling heifers.
