The evening sale of ‘oven-ready’ Christmas poultry saw approximately 500 birds forward, with a large crowd of buyers present from local villages and towns, keen to purchase their Christmas dinner. They were spoilt for choice from the quality of entry of birds presented for sale.
Geese sold to £90 for a 14lb goose, from Mrs S Garnett, with others at £75 & £72.
Ducks sold to £25 for a 8 lb duck from Mr J H Clarke, with others at £24 & £23.
Chickens sold to £33 for a 14 lb chicken from Messrs Jenkinson, with others at £27, £26 & £24.
Perhaps the best show of Turkeys seen for several years sold to in excess of vendors’ expectation, with birds generally within either side of £2/lb, dependant on the weight.
The heaviest bird of the evening was a 37 lb turkey from R Hodgson which sold for £70, with other heavy birds £55 to £62. Handy weight birds, 12-14 lb, sold in excess of £3/lb, with bronze turkeys in short supply and selling to £38 for a 13 lb turkey from Messrs Jenkinson.
